Lathe operations

An indispensable machining operation for all solids of revolution

Turning, or lathe machining, is a chip removing process that produces a cylindrical and/or tapered part using cutting tools on so-called lathes. The part to be machined is clamped between jaws, in a mandrel, or between centers. Drilling operations are also possible on a lathe, although these are not its main function.

With turning operations, the cutting movement is achieved by rotating the part which is clamped between the jaws of a chuck or a specific mandrel, while the feed motion is obtained by moving the cutting tool. The combination of these two movements allows the generation of cylindrical or otherwise circular parts by chip removal.

Turning is an inevitable machining operation at Masson-Marine's, since a large number of components used in propellers, shafts, or transmissions are solids of revolution.

Our machine tools include numerically controlled lathes and conventional lathes.

CN DORRIES 178

Numerically controlled lathes (NC lathes: 3 machines)

These lathes have numeric control which makes machining more accurate and repeatable.

  • The vertical lathe DÖRRIES 178 has a capacity of 900 mm in diameter and 400 mm in height. The control cabinet is by FAGOR.
  • The ERNAULT TOYODA HES 52 NC lathe features a maximum machining diameter of 300 mm and a length of 1,100 mm and can load up to 12 tools. Its electric enclosure is NUM 760.

MORI SEIKI SL400 BMC/2000
  • The MORI SEIKI SL 400 BMC/2000 NC lathe accepts up to 12 tools, with a maximum of 6 rotating tools (C-axis); its strokes are 345 mm along the X-axis and 2,100 mm along the Z-axis. It has a capacity of 710 mm in swing diameter, and a center distance of 2,325 mm, with a maximum machining diameter of 400 mm. The electric enclosure is FANUC MSD-501/2.

GURUTZPE

Conventional lathes (3 machines)

  • Extra long parallel lathe GURUTZ PE with steady rest. The maximum diameter on this lathe is 650 mm with a maximum length of 10 metres. This device is used to machine long shafts.

ERNAULT JUPITER 830
  • Parallel lathe ERNAULT JUPITER 830 with steady rest. It has a capacity of 830 mm diameter and 2,000 mm distance between centers.
  • Parallel lathe CAZENEUVE HB 725 with steady rest and display unit. It has a capacity of 575 mm diameter and 2,000 mm distance between centers.
